Blagdon Pond Pump Troubleshooting
|One of the most important parts of pond ownership and using accessories such as pumps and filters, is the maintenance and cleaning side of things. In the following post, we will therefore discuss troubleshooting for a Blagdon pond pump in particular, as these are one of the most popular available.
It is important to note that this guide is particularly based on Blagdon’s MidiPond pump range and as such, may not apply to a pump you have. There are various guides available online and the user manual for most pumps includes a troubleshooting section.
At the very least, it should give you a good idea of where to start when trying to solve common issues.
As most problems are related to blocked or dirty components, we felt it was worth highlighting some cleaning tips for your Blagdon pond pump before we troubleshoot some common problems.

Routine Process For Maintenance And Cleaning
When the water flow from the pump is noticeably reduced, you should follow the routine procedure for maintenance and cleaning.
- Start by ensuring the electricity is switched off and the plug is removed from the mains outlet.
- Take the pump from the pond. Importantly, don’t use the cable to lift it out.
- If using a MidiPond pump, press the button and pull the pre-filter cage front off. Thoroughly wash this cage using fresh water.
Monthly Process For Maintenance And Cleaning
For deeper cleans every month, follow the same process for routine cleaning and then include the following steps:
- Remove the cover of the impeller turning it anti-clockwise as this releases the lock. 7
- Then with a firm pull you can remove it.
- Then simply use fresh water to clean all the parts, being careful not to inadvertently damage anything.

Problem
There Is Low Flow Of Water From The Pump
- If there is a low flow of water from the pump, follow the routine procedure for cleaning the pump.
- If there is still no change, follow the monthly procedure for cleaning the pump.
- Check all pipework for any leaks or blockages or if any has been laid and is kinked or crushed.
- Make sure the water height pumped from the surface of the water (also known as the Head) is as low as possible. The reason being, a higher head produces a lower flow rate and wears the pump out more.
- Use the minimum hose fittings possible and use a pond hose with the smoothest bore and largest diameter over a short distance. This increases the flow rate and reduces/eliminates frictional flow loss.
Fountain Is Performing Poorly
Your fountain may not be performing well for two main reasons:
- The fountain’s height is reduced
- The jets are blocked
These issues can be solved by:
- Thoroughly clean the fountain head and flow adjuster, using a hose or tap to wash them.
- For waste or limescale build-up, you should try using Blagdon’s pond pump cleaner for the best results.
- Reduce the maintenance required by using Daisy Jets with foam inserts.
There Is No Water Flowing From The Pump
- Make sure the power supply is switched on
- Check the wiring and fuse, referring to the electrical installations found in the user’s manual
- Follow the same procedure for low water flow from above.
I have a Blagdon INPOND 5 in 1 3000 pond pump and the pressure out of the fountain is dramatically reduced. Even after cleaning all the filters and fountain head? Can anyone help?
Blagdon Midi Pondpump
The impeller of my pond pump is not rotating smoothly, the best way to describe the rotation is Lumpy. Although it is pumping it has restricted flow. the impeller is free to rotate with no debris in the chamber. Could it be an electrical problem in the stater windings .
What is the function of the dial on the top of the 3000
